This loop runs the water or antifreeze liquid through the pipes so that it heats or cools with the earth’s natural temperature. Are geothermal heat pumps efficient?

Geothermal heat pumps are highly efficient, often exceeding 300% efficiency (meaning they produce 3-4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity used).
This high efficiency translates to lower energy bills and reduced carbon emissions.
They can be up to 3 times more efficient than traditional air conditioners for cooling and 2-5 times more efficient than gas, propane, or oil furnaces for heating.

Loop Configurations and Installations

A geothermal ground loop is set up as a network of pipes that is buried in the backyard of a homeowner. The set up is either horizontal in trenches or vertical in boreholes. Space and types of soil may be the determining factor to the configuration setup.

Fluid Circulation: The fluid is made of water or a mixture of water with antifreeze that will circulate through the pipes. During the winter it absorbs the heat from the ground and during the summer, it releases the heat in the ground.

Operation of Heat Pumps: These are located indoors. During the winter it either takes heat from the fluid or transfers the heat to the fluid during the summer to cool the building.

Geothermal heat pumps are more energy efficient than the traditional heating and cooling systems as their resource for heating and cooling comes from the earth’s constant temperature.
